Won Kim aka ReviseCMW

Pike House Hub • 91st & Longwood

Won is a creative force that never sleeps (or at least it sure seems that way). His bold, colorful, and compelling work executed primarily in spray paint and acrylic, can be seen on the Garage at Nicky’s of Beverly and on his own home garage, as well as other local spaces. He may live in Beverly but Won’s reputation as an artist is citywide and goes back 25 years. “I paint murals all around the city,” he said. When he’s not painting, Won is chef/owner of Kimski, a Korean Polish street food restaurant in Bridgeport, and a popular DJ. Won is constantly pushing himself creatively to try new things, explore and collaborate.

For this year’s Art Walk, he has invited fellow graffiti artists Chucho and Chris Shannon to collaborate on a “paint jam” in an outdoor green space near the Pike House. “Expect to see a lot of layers, colors, and overlap of graffiti-inspired styles,” he said. Active with the Beverly Area Arts Alliance since he first came to the neighborhood, Won said that the best part of being part of the local arts community through the Alliance is “Just being able to participate and get involved. They really are great in supporting the local arts of any medium and will fight for inclusion for all.”

Kathy Weaver: Making a Scene

Beverly Arts Center • 2407 West 111th Street

Kathy Weaver is a story-telling artist. She employs paint, fiber and sculpture to talk about the human condition in an age of technology and warfare. Robot imagery is integral to the narrative in her work. “The robots portend the future, and like a Greek chorus, report the here and now,” says Weaver. In “Making A Scene,” in the BAC’s Simmerling Gallery, Weaver creates an imaginative world full of colorful characters, “The Winged Ones” and “The Bulletheads,” both cyborgs, that are the driving force in a battle of good versus evil. Depictions of moments in their lives act as a prism through which our behaviors are reflected.  The characters appear in various media: paintings, embroideries on linen, videos and three-dimensional fiber and clay figures. Kids of all ages can make their own characters inspired by the exhibit from 2-4pm.

The Lobby, Atrium, Hallways and Courtyard will feature spoken word performances led by Chicago’s Poet Laureate Avery R. Young in the courtyard, Black American history quilts by Dorothy Straughter, glass art by Kat Huddleston, paintings and screenprints by Pierce Cruz, paintings by Dionne Milton, “The Wall of Truth” by the “Queen of Luxuria” & piano painted by Osei Crowder for “Chicago Plays” Piano Room Gallery: Piano Room Gallery and Long Hallway: new work by SXU students and alumni. Live music by the SXU Jazz Band 12-2pm.

Ashley January: Environments of a Heavy Joy

The Studio Space • 1903 West 103rd Street

Ashley January creates contemporary paintings that address the Black maternal mortality and morbidity crisis. Influenced by her own traumatic pregnancy and survival, the imagery of her work centers on the experiences of Black mothers, birthing people and children who have suffered adverse birth outcomes but challenge the institutional modes of finding solutions. Continuing the delicately layered conversation surrounding Black maternal health, the images serve as a global call to action for more awareness, research, and the eradication of unnecessary maternal and infant deaths. Her new space on 103rd and Walden will serve as her working studio as well as an arts and cultural incubator for creatives on the Southside of Chicago.

Grand Opening Ceremony 11am, dance performance 2pm

Flypaper Chicago

10552 South Western Avenue

Flypaper is a studio and exhibition space owned by Nationally acclaimed, award-winning photographer Clifton Henri. He exhibits his work in galleries and juried art festivals across the country. His practice is heavily rooted in identity, under-representation and self-declaration, intentionally focusing on Black and Brown people and the environments they live in. Several artists will be joining Clifton Henri at Flypaper, including: painters J.Height, Sam Kirkwood & Phil Cotton.

The idea of Flypaper Chicago was inspired by “The Sweet Flypaper of Life,” a 1955 book of photography and poetry by Roy DeCarava and Langston Hughes.

Pike House Hub

91st & Longwood

The Alliance has partnered with the Eugene S. Pike House Foundation to rehabilitate the historic Pike House to create a community cultural center.

This year’s Beverly Art Walk will celebrate the coming of the future Pike House Community Cultural Center with a variety of programming in the area around the Pike House including the Uprising Craft Market,  live music by GraceNotes, The Wabash Kid and songstress Rachel Drew, a live painting collaboration by Won Kim (aka “ReviseCMW”) and fellow Chicago street artists Chucho and Chris Shannon, an artmaking “throwdown” by Chicago Creative Collaborators, a “Show and Tell” of historic artifacts by Chicago Cultural Historian Tim Samuelson, “Birds, Bees & Butterflies,” a nature-themed crafts and facepainting for kids and “Sanctuary,” a unique temporary art installation honoring nature, history and community.

Sanctuary

Pike House Hub • 91st & Longwood

“Sanctuary,” located just East of the Pike House, is a temporary, public art installation inspired by an obscure piece of neighborhood history and designed to bring some joy, beauty and humor to passersby. Volunteers have cleared invasive species and planted native plants around an old nearly forgotten monument, bringing it back to life. “Victory Bird,” a bold and whimsical sculpture by artist John Colson will top the column and unique bird houses and sculptures by Robin Power, Paloma Trecka, Mairead Zigulich and other local and Chicago-area artists will surround it. An inscription on site will read:

Where this column sits, many pass by on foot, bike, scooter, car and train. It’s a spot that’s urban and rural, joins two neighborhoods, a park, a bike trail and a forest preserve. Back In 1928, this limestone column commemorated a bird sanctuary built and maintained in the nearby woods and beautification efforts by the women of the community during a wave of progressive activism around ecology and public space. Nearly 100 years later, birds of many species still find a haven in nearby Dan Ryan Woods, and local volunteers still plant flowers.

Join us for a “Rededication” at the monument at 11 a.m on Art Walk day, with live music, coffee and donuts, and a poem read by author, playwright and poet Tina Jenkins Bell. Sales of the bird houses and sculptures on site will support the effort to save the Pike House. For more information about “Sanctuary” and the Pike House visit pikehouse.org. “Sanctuary” is brought to you by the Beverly Area Arts Alliance and the Eugene S. Pike House Foundation. All of the artworks that make up “Sanctuary” are for sale. Half of the proceeds will benefit the Eugene S. Pike House Foundation – an organization dedicated to rehabilitating the nearby Pike House to become the PIke House Community Cultural Center.

Slow & Steady: 20 Years of Art by Jennifer Cronin

Vanderpoel Museum: Ridge Park (11am-3:30pm)

Jennifer Cronin is a local visual artist known for her realistic paintings that explore the mystery and complexity of everyday life. Cronin’s work has evolved many times over, delving into psychology, income inequality, and climate change.  Her most recent work celebrates the mundane, infusing quotidian scenes with a sense of magic and mystery. “These paintings show that even here and now, there is beauty to relish in, joy to surrender to, and magic hiding in plain sight” – Cronin.  Her exhibition brings together work from Cronin’s entire career spanning twenty years for her first museum solo exhibition. The Vanderpoel Museum is a storied venue, featuring works Cronin will give an Artist Talk at 1:00pm.

Ephemera Gallery

1810 West 103rd Street

For the first time in the Beverly Art Walk’s 12-year history, the Alliance has its own gallery space. We are proud to present 12 historic prints by Torkel Korling alongside contemporary artists Preston Thomas and Thandi Cai. This exhibit represents the first curatorial partnership with Tim Samuelson, the City of Chicago’s Cultural Historian Emeritus, engaging contemporary artists and activating his collection of architectural artifacts, photography, and oddities.

A native of Sweden who came to Chicago in 1923, Torkel Korling’s over seventy year career in commercial photography generated striking imagery for publications like Life and Fortune, evocative portraits of Chicago, and documentation of processes in industrial technology. The twelve signed prints from the David R. Phillips Collection represent a recreation of a 1990 exhibit at Stephen Daiter Gallery.

We are honored to present Korling’s work alongside two talented contemporary artists. Preston Thomas, a longtime Beverly Art Walk participant, will show work from his series “Beneath the Sheltering Sky.” Most of the photographs in this series are a study in scale. The elegant and massive cloud formations dwarf our existence. A subtle reminder that we, humans, are tiny things… playing a small role in a much grander scheme. Thandi Cai, an artist from the American South exploring an Asian diasporic identity. Thandi will show screenprints and artbooks that demonstrate the beauty of printed matter, especially with the rising demand of on-screen images in our world. The mediums are a variety of printing techniques, ranging from laser jet on vinyl adhesive to letterpress printing and woodblock type on parchment.

The Studio Space • 1903 West 103rd Street

Studio Artists

Dan McCabe

2213 W. 109th St.

High energy, boundless creativity, and endless avenues of inspiration keep McCabe’s work fresh and flowing. “I want my artworks, my pots to express love and a celebration of life. I want them to be joyful and timeless and easy to connect with,” he said. “Nature really inspires me.” Looking around his sunny studio where pots of all shapes, sizes and stages

of completion sit on the potter’s wheel, in the kiln, or on shelves, McCabe’s love of nature and penchant for experimentation is evident. He is constantly trying new forms, new techniques, shapes, finishes and styles. His signature drawings and decals add another element of exploration. Fine art and functional pieces are recognizable for distinctive decorative elements that mix flora and fauna with a charming dash of kitsch. McCabe’s home studio will also feature fellow artists Brendan McAlinden, Hector Gonzalez and Mairead Zigulich.

Live music by Brendan McAlinden & Friends (2-4pm)

Brian Keane

10416 S. Hamilton Ave.

For painter and sculptor Brian Keane, a childhood interest in drawing cartoons led to his earning a BFA in painting from the University of Illinois. His colorfully fluid artwork resonates with his roots in cartooning, and his home studio, which will be open for the Beverly Art Walk, is filled with vibrant abstract oil paintings and whimsical geometric wood sculptures. “I’ve been building abstract wall hanging sculptures and figurative fantasy characters,” he said. His latest project is an enchanting miniature art gallery he maintains in his front yard – a perfect extension of the imaginative worlds he creates in his work.

Keane got involved with The Alliance soon after moving to Beverly/Morgan Park in 2015. “The Beverly Area Arts Alliance and Beverly Art Walk build community through connection, discussion and appreciation of the artists and musicians that express and give voice to the creativity that we all share,” he said. He currently teaches Drawing and Painting at Marist High School, where he studied art as a teen.

Judie Anderson

10632 S. Hoyne Ave.

Watercolor artist, illustrator and former Art Director of the Chicago Tribune, Judie Anderson has been a professional artist for nearly 70 years and part of the Beverly Art Walk since its inception.  Visitors can get a glimpse of her extraordinary body of work when she opens her studio for the Beverly Art Walk. Anderson started her career as an illustrator for high school textbooks, and most recently did the illustrations for “The Plucky Ukrainian Sunflower,” a children’s book written by her author daughter, Karen Doornebos. Anderson will be exhibiting illustrations from the children’s picture book during the Walk. “By inviting people into my studio, I can show them the process of [illustration] from pencil sketches and rough drafts to finished art and text,” Anderson said. Proceeds from The Plucky Ukrainian Sunflower will go towards humanitarian aid to the war in Ukraine.

Live music by Jim White and Julia Devens (2-4pm)

The Alliance Honors Eugene S. Pike House Foundation at 10th Anniversary Beverly Art Walk

The Eugene S. Pike House is a historic community landmark that is facing demolition but has the potential to serve Beverly and Morgan Park as a fine arts facility. The Alliance is working with the newly created Eugene S. Pike Foundation to raise funds and give this building a new life.

We are grateful for the talents of local filmmaker Pat Odom and his company StoryView for this 2023 Art Walk video recap.

Our Community

The Beverly Art Walk would not be possible without the generous financial support of local small businesses and families, as well as countless volunteer hours by the Alliance board, artists, and neighbors. Please support our arts community: purchase art, shop participating venues, and attend events. The Alliance is driven by our love for art and the people who make it, and we are thankful for those who embrace the arts.
