Through research beginning at the Edward J. Williams collection at the Stony Island Arts Bank, my quilts come with a history that is painfully ugly. Yet there is beauty in how our ancestors endured this pain and set the stage for our success. This work is moved by a desire to reach back to the charged history of our ancestors and provide the onlooker the difficult opportunity to process the torment of our ancestor’s experience and imagine how they reached for the strength to endure the trying times of their day. While in the throes of completing projects, I am proud to channel their experiences. I am humbled at the amount of interest this work has generated. Thank you.
